The Better Start for Children with Disability (Better Start) initiative is an Australian Government program providing funding support for early intervention services and therapies. It aims to assist eligible children with developmental disabilities to access funding for early treatment, diagnostic and management services.
Better Start is available for children who have been diagnosed with one of a variety conditions including, but not limited to:
- Cerebral Palsy
- Down syndrome
- Fragile X
- Hearing impairment
- Sight impairment
- Prader-Willi syndrome
- Williams syndrome
- Angelman Syndrome
Children registered with Better Start can access up to $12,000 (maximum $6,000 per year) to pay for early intervention services such as occupational therapy, physiotherapy, speech therapy and psychology. Parents can use this funding for both therapy and resources to allow their child the best possible preparation for school.
An additional $2,000 may be available for families who live in outer regional and remote areas to assist with the additional expenses (travel, home visits) to allow them to access services.

Helping Children with Autism
The Helping Children with Autism program is an early intervention service provided by the Australian Government. The HCWA package is for support and services for children with Autism Spectrum Disorders and includes support for parents, families, carers and children.

Private Health Rebates
Most private health funds will provide rebates for Occupational Therapy. The level and amount of cover is individual to each health fund so please contact your health fund to gain further information about the rebate you will receive.
